Basileae, 1575, FIRST EDITION, Vellum, Bound in Original Vellum. Bookplate of Lewis Austin
Storrs. Quite good condition. 12mo. [32] 353, [133] pages. (A duplicate sale
copy from the British Museum in 1818) . Originally had been written in the 8th
century, possibly by Virgil of Salzburg, and is thought to be a practical joke
by Virgil against Boniface (also known as the Apostle of the Germans, martyred
in 754 A. D. ) . It has been suggested that the mysterious Latin cosmological
writer who called himself "Æthicus Ister" was St. Virgil, but there is no proof
of this. The name "Aethicus" probably is a pseudonym. Medieval Latin literature
studies seem to indicate a very strong Irish influence in this 16th c. Latin
Cosmography work. One Source portrays AETHICUS ( = ETHICUS) ISTER, "the
philosopher of Istria, " the supposed but unknown author of a description of the
world written in Greek. An abridgment, under the title of Cosmo-graphia Ethici,
written in barbarous Latin, and wrongly described as the work of St Jerome,
probably belongs to the 7th century. After a discussion of the creation of the
world and a description of the earth, an account of the wonderful journeys of
Aethicus is given, with digressions on various subjects, such as Alexander the
Great and the kings of Rome, full of obscure and fabulous details. - Some of the
many contributors of this work were Aethicus, Claudius Rutilius Namatianus,
Antonius Augustinus, Vibius Sequester, Josias Simmler, Joannes Balassa de
Gyarmath, Thomas Guarin, Pierre Pithon; Translated by Thomas Guarin; Contributor

account of Anson?s voyage. England, at war with Spain in 1739, equipped eight
ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western
coast of South America, for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of
wealth from the Pacific area....Lord Anson, who was a friend and patron of
Benjamin Robins, after returning from the voyage around the world in the
Centurion, appears to have entrusted to Robins, for revision, the account of the
voyage which had been compiled from the journals by his chaplain, Richard

significance. In so far as it refers to the Cabala it may be of use in
elucidating some of the alchemical ideas. There was an second edition of this

An Apology for the true
Christian Divinity, as the same is held forth, and preached, by the people,

Newport,
Rhode-Island, 1729,
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION; JAMES
FRANKLIN, Full Calf Leather,
Printed in 1729 by James Franklin, brother
of Benjamin Franklin. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Barclay's "Apology" AND the
First Volume printed at Newport, where the press had been established in 1727 by
James Franklin. - Original paneled calf securely bound and blind tooled in the
"Cambridge Style". Internally, the leaves are clean and crisp, minimal foxing,
and collated complete. - Quite Rare. --- Robert Barclay, the first and greatest
of Quaker theologians, converted to Quakerism in 1666, and in 1667, joined the
Society of Friends. He soon after became involved in controversies in which he
showed himself the superior in logic and learning, no less than in tolerance. In
1672 he startled Aberdeen by walking through its streets in sackcloth and ashes,
subsequently suffering much persecution and frequently imprisoned. He made
several journeys into Holland and Germany, the last in company with William Penn
and George Fox. He was one of the twelve Quakers who acquired East New Jersey in
1682, and was appointed its nominal governor. Barclay's works were collected in
1692 in a folio entitled "Truth Triumphant," republished in (3) vols. in
1717-18. Of these the greatest is "An Apology for the True Christian Divinity
held by the Quakers". Barclay, who was himself of aristocratic lineage, prefaced
the Apology with a letter to King Charles II, saying that he wished to explain
Friends? theological principles to the King and his people, so that they might
find the Quakers to be both wise and learned, and to understand that they held
?beliefs agreeable to scripture, reason and true learning.? This remarkable
book, which has been recommended by bishops to theological students as the best
available for many purposes, is the standard exposition of Quakerism, and
undoubtedly ranks among the classics of its period. Mr. Leslie Stephen (1885,
Dictionary of National Biography) describes it as "one of the most impressive
theological writings of the century : grave, logical, and often marked by the
eloquence of lofty moral convictions." "The St. Paul of the Quakers," says
Coleridge of the author. - REFERENCES: Evans, 3129; Alden, J.E. Rhode Island,

| Description:
|
London, 1753, FIRST EDITION, Full Calf Leather, Printed and sold by Luke Hinde, at the Bible in
George-Yard, Lombard-Street , 1753. (In Two Volumes). - Original leather
bindings and labels with spine securely rebacked. Collated complete, the leaves
are generally clean with minimal foxing. Contemporary brown ink inscriptions on
front endpapers. Bookplate of Cheshire Monthly Meeting - Morley Library on front
pastedown, but without any usual library markings, stampings, etc. in text. The
Bookplate is a valuable addition revealing provenance to the workings of the
Quaker movement. The Morley Library was an early location chosen for their local
Cheshire Monthly Meetings. - The Quaker movement was based on the teachings of
George Fox, who formed a society called the "Friends of Truth" in 1648. He
taught that the presence of the inner light in an individual should be the sole
guide to that person?s faith and actions. His followers were called Quakers
because Fox had once admonished a judge, and told him "he should tremble at the
word of the Lord. " Quakers would have nothing to do with priest-led religion of
any kind, but preferred to gather together in each other's houses for silent
prayer. They refused to attend the established church, or pay its tithes or
rates. What most enraged the authorities about them however was their refusal to
swear oaths upon the Bible, and their belief that all forms of warfare and
violence, even in defence, were sinful. The whole fabric of British society
rested on the ability to make people swear allegiance to the king, and also to
swear on the bible to "tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth" in court.
If people were allowed to refuse to take oaths, or fight when their king and
country commanded them, it was feared that anarchy and invasion would be the
result. Quakers were therefore looked upon as being almost as dangerous as
Catholics, and persecution of them began, even under the Commonwealth of Oliver
Cromwell. From the beginning, Quakers recorded the persecution or "sufferings"
of their brethren. Returns of the sufferings of individual Friends throughout
England were brought to the London yearly meeting, and recorded in the "Great
Book of Sufferings. " There are 44 volumes of this book covering the years 1650
to 1844. In 1753, Joseph Besse published an edited version in 2 volumes, called
"A Collection of the Sufferings of the People called Quakers". - The end of the
Second volume contains (17) Indexes, Lists, and Tables showing the Names of
thousands of Quakers' who either Suffered, Died, or were Convicted or Banished
for their religious testimony. ; Vol. 2vols; Folio; lv, 767; 638,[10]
