Author: Tertullian, (Tertulliani) (160-230). Q. Sept Florentis - Rigault, (Rigaltii) Nicolas [1577-1654]
Title: Opera Ad Vetustissimorum Exemplarium Fidem Locis Quamplurimis Emendata. Nicolai Rigaltii I. C. Observationibus & Notis Illustrata. Cum Indice Glossario Stili Africani.
Description: Lutetiae, Paris, 1634, FIRST EDITION, Full Calf Leather, Lutetiae : Sumptibus Mathurini Du Puis, via Iacobaea, sub signo Corona, 1634. - Contemporary dark brown full calf folio. Two Parts in One Volume. Red and black title page with engraved device, Head and Tail pieces, engraved initials and printed marginalia. - Rigaltius used a collation of a now lost manuscript from Dijon, the Divionensis. He also used a 'Liber Vrsini' belonging to Fulvio Orsini. This must likewise have been notes of readings, rather than a manuscript. Fascinating ly, for De pudicitia he refers also to a Remensis, otherwise unknown. - Tertullian was an outstanding writer and theologian; (160-220 A. D. ) , considered by many to be the greatest Christian writer before St. Augustine. He was the first theologian to write extensively in Latin instead of Greek and helped lay the foundation for Western theology. As a member of the North African church, he introduced the word "trinitas, " which found its way into Christian usage. Probably born in Carthage, he was educated in Greek and Latin literature and philosophy and later studied law. In his youth he was deeply involved in the literary and social life of the day. Converted to Christianity as an adult, he may have been a priest of the church of Carthage. His works, most of which cannot be dated with certainty, fall into three classes: the apologetic (defending Christianity against paganism) , the polemical-dogmatic (refuting heresies) , and the disciplinary and ascetic works. His style is highly personal and quotable; at times terse and obscure, but also powerful, angry, and passionate. [EB] - Extremely Rare Title. ; Folio; [20], 862, [2], 123,[80] pages

Author: Voragine, Jacobus De (1230-1298) (Giacomo Da Varazze) , (Jacopo Da Varazze)
Title: R. R. P. F. Iacobi De Voragine Archiepiscopi Ianuensis. Ordinis Praedicator um Sermones in Dominicas Et Ferias Quadragesimae, Alias Illustrati Studio R. P. F. Rudolphi Clutii, Ordinis Praedicatorum Sacrae Theologiae Baccalaurei. Cum Novo Indice Sermonum, Rerum & Verborum Locupletissimo.
Description: Lugduni, Joannem Matthaeum Martin, 1688, Full Calf Leather, - Jacobus de Voragine was an Italian chronicler and archbishop of Genoa. He fulfilled several quasi-diplomatic missions and as archbishop exercised feudal authority over San Remo and governed certain churches in the Levant. As archbishop he promoted efforts for the reform of the clergy, intervened successfully to promote peace between Guelph and Ghibelline, and transferred the government of San Remo to the civil authority. Jacobus is best known for his writings, especially the "Golden Legend, " which was possibly the most popular book of the Middle Ages. This work, known also as "Lives of the Saints" and as Historia Lombardica, consists of readings from the lives of the saints for the festivals of the church year. It was probably written before 1260, and was very early translated into at least French, German, English (by William Caxton, 1484? ) , Italian, and Dutch. Within about fifty years after the invention of printing more than 100 editions of original and translations had been printed. Besides the "Golden Legend" Jacobus wrote several series of sermons "On the Saints, " "On the Blessed Virgin, " etc, only less popular than the Legend, and also known as "Golden" on account of their popularity. - This compilation of topical Sermons written in Latin by Jacobus de Voragine is quite diverse and includes material on Jesus Christ, the Church and the Virgin Mary, as shown in the detailed Indices. - He is the author of a collection of 307 sermons, "Sermones de sanctis, de tempore, quadragesimales, de Beata Maria Virgine". They have been repeatedly printed, both separately and collectively. The earliest edition of the whole collection was printed in 1484, probably at Venice, where they were published a second time in 1497 and repeatedly thereafter. - BIBLIOGRAPHY: For editions of the works of Jacobus consult: Potthast, Wegweiser, pp, 634-35. ; Large 8vo; 668, [17] index pages
