Title: A New System of Domestic Cookery; Formed Upon Principles of Economy: and Adapted to the Use of Private Families.
Description: London, 1846, Embossed Cloth, With Ten Illustrations. By A Lady. London: Published by T. Noble, 79, Fleet Street. - Binding is the original dark green design embossed cloth. Frontispiece shows a woman in a kitchen scene preparing various animal carcasses. The nine engraved plates illustrate cuts of meat, carving, and trussing. - The DNB gives the following account of the publication of this book: While living at Swansea in 1806 Mrs. Rundell collected various recipes for cookery and suggestions for household management for the use of her married daughters. " She sent the manuscript to the publisher, John Murray (1778-1843) , of whose family she was an old friend. He suggested the title "Domestic Cookery, " and had the work carefully revised by competent editors, among whom was Dr. Charles Taylor, of the Society of Arts, and added engravings. It was published as "A New System of Domestic Cookery" in 1808, and had an immense success. From five to ten thousand copies were long [sic] printed yearly. It became one of Murray's most valuable properties, and in 1812, when he bought the lease of the house in Albemarle Street, part of the surety consisted of the copyright of the "Domestic Cookery. " As the earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness, it called forth many imitations. - REFERENCE: Cagle's, A Matter of Taste, # 977. ; 8vo; xxiv,361 pages

The first collection of accounts of state trials was published in 1719 in four volumes. Although without an editors name, it appears that Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) , an historical and geographical writer, was responsible for the collection. The trials are invaluable not only for their reports of criminal cases, in which the whole course of criminal , procedure and evidence may be traced, but for their historical information. This work is, in fact, a compendium of some of the most famous events in British history from 1388 to 1736 and makes fascinating reading. ; Folio 18" x 12"; iv, 922 pages

Author: Snape, Andrew. D. D. (1675-1742)
Title: A Second Letter to the Lord Bishop of Bangor, in Vindication of the Former. by Andrew Snape, D. D. Chaplain in Ordinary to His Majesty.
Description: London, 1717, FIRST EDITION, Full Calf Leather, Printed for Jonah Bowyer, at the Rose in Ludgate-Street,1717. - Includes Half-title: 'Dr. Snape's second letter to the Lord Bishop of Bangor'. - The last 3 pages contain advertisements. - REFERENCE: ESTCT25853. - The Bangorian Controversy was a religious dispute in the Church of England during the early part of the reign of George I. Benjamin Hoadly, bishop of Bangor, Wales, delivered a sermon (1717) before the king in which he denied that the church had any doctrinal or disciplinary authority. Advocates of ecclesiastical authority (among them Andrew Snape and William Law) attacked Hoadly's position, and a sharp controversy ensued, in which some 50 writers participated and about 200 pamphlets were issued. Hoadly believed that the churches' authority should be limited to the Kingdom of Heaven. Andrew Snape, headmaster of Eton and like Hoadly a chaplain to the king, launched a counterattack in an open letter to Hoadly, to which Hoadly responded with "An Answer to the Reverend Dr. Snape's Accusation", which inspired this Second Letter from Snape, which in turn gave rise to numerous sequels, including "A Vindication of a Passage in Dr. Snape's Second Letter" and "Farther Remarks on the Reverend Dr. Snape's Second Letter ... By the Author of the former Remarks". ; 8vo; 69,[3] pages

MDCCXXVII. ---- John Spencer (1630-1693) , English theologian and Hebrew scholar. In his most famous work De legibus, Spencer laid the foundations of the science of comparative religion and provided a survey on the religious antiquities of the Hebrews. The first edition of this remarkable work which consisted of the first two "libri" was published in 1685. The Work was expanded to include the 3rd and 4th "Libri" of Spencer’s work. The expanded work was published posthumously in 1727. This volume being auctioned consists of the first 2 books comprising volume 1 of the 2 volume 1727 expanded edition. ARTICLE: One reviewer of Spencers Work writes: First edition of an influential work, by John Spencer (1630-93) , Dean of Ely and Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. It is one of the founding works of the study of comparative religion, in which the author discusses the relations between Hebrew rituals and beliefs, and those of other Semitic peoples. With examples produced from sacrificial rites, the Temple, and its appurtenances, and e. G. The institution of the scapegoat, Spencer links these laws and customs to those of other civilisations. The first three books were devoted to the laws and customs of Biblical and divine origin. A fourth book, dealing with the rabbinic institutions and largely based on Maimonides, is referred to in the work, but was published only after his death, in 1727. See EJ XV 261, Diestel 541-43, New Schaff-Herzog XI 41.The work is arranged as follows: After a general survey of Jewish laws and rites follows, with a separate title-page, the second book dealing with Mosaic laws underlying the Sabian rites [Zabiorum ritus]. Spencer properly distinguishes the Sabians (a sect much concerned with astrology and the heavenly phenomena) from the Sabaeans (or Mandaeans - see Pallis 44 & 82). The third book contains eight dissertations on the origin of sacrifices, the Ark of Covenant, the scapegoat, on Urim & Thummim (earlier published in 1669) , etc….." Original Binding embossed with gilt rule. (6) Six heavy chords on spine with gilt ornamentation within dentelles. Maroon spine label with gilt titling. Gilt to spine is somewhat faded; spine cover has surface cracking. Contents: all signatures very secure. Subscribers list. All pages present.
