Philosophical Principles of Religion: Natural and Revealed Containing the Elements of Natural Philosophy and the Proofs of Natural Religion Arising from Them.
|
|
Description:
|
1716 / 1725, FIRST & THIRD EDITION, Full Calf Leather,
An amazing piece of history, this a very early philosophy book, nothing less than an early 18th century philosopher trying to prove the truth of religion through mathematics, a philosopher influenced by Newton. The book is Philosophical Principles of Religion: Natural and Revealed, by George Cheyne, M. D. And F. R. S: In Two Parts. Part I. Containing the Elements of Natural Philosophy and the Proofs of Natural Religion arising from them. The third edition. Corrected and enlarged. Part II. Containing the Nature and Kinds of Infinites; their Arithmetick and Uses: Together with the Philosophick Principles of Reveal'd Religion. Published by George Strahan, at the Golden Ball in Cornhill, over Against the Royal Exchange (London) in 1725. The first part alone had been previously published in 1705. Written for and dedicated to his pupil, John, Duke of Roxburgh, Cheyne's Philosophical Principles were mainly drawn from Newton. Included here is his unofficial discourse on Boyle in which he discusses Newtonian science from the point of view of natural theology. Although the book was rejected by his contemporar ies as containing little of value, it was used in both English universities . Chapters I and III of the second part, 'The Arithmetick of Infinites', include a fascinating attempt to reduce religion to mathematical principles. Cheyne's struggle with corpulence and excess became the subject of his popular later works on health and nutrition, Essay of Health and Long Life and The English Malady. Not in Babson or Wallis. This copy is in the original leather binding, with 5 raised bands on the spine, 8x5. 360 pages to the first part, and 190 pages to the second part. An amazing work. A reissue of the 1724 edition, with the general titlepage and the titlepage to pt.1 partly reset. Pt.1 is of the 3rd. Ed. And has separate titlepage, dated 1725, and pagination, but continuous register with the general preliminaries. Pt.2 has separate titlepage, pagination and register and is dated 1716. With a final advertisement leaf. ESTCT64236; 8vo; [32],360;[24],190,[ 2]pp. pages

London, 1733, FIRST EDITION, Full Calf Leather,
Printed for the editor; by Henry Woodfall, at Elzevir's-Head without Temple-Bar. 1733. With an initial imprimatur (licence to publish) leaf of King George II, and List of Subscribers which include the royal family, many dukes, lords, & ladies. - Christian Cole was the Secretary to Charles Montagu, the fourth Earl and first Duke of Manchester. Beginning in 1699, Cole accompanied & served with the Duke of Manchester in all his European diplomatic negotiations. He is listed on title page as "Some time Resident at Venice. " This volume contains all the diplomatic correspondence for this period sent to & from the Duke of Manchester, collected & edited by Cole who also included Manchester's 1697-99 diplomatic correspondence which he gained access to although he was not with Manchester at this time but was in the Hague and Ryswick with the Earl of Pembroke. The Introduction indicates that this is a book to improve the mind of the readers rather than a common French Memoirs giving accounts of Amours & Feats of Private men. It is a compilation of authentic Memoirs of Ministers of State, Princes, Admirals, Generals, and others who conduct Grand Affairs. "As I give an account of the Times, in which great Revolutions and Wars happened in Moscovy, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, etc... So I have now and then gone a little out of the way by inserting some Letters, and other Papers relating to Affairs of those Countries. " - ESTCT124296 ; Folio; xii, 559 pages

London, 1724, Full Calf Leather,
Printed for R. and J. Bonwicke, and R. Wilkin: and J. Walthoe, and T. Ward, 1724. - The final leaf contains tables of weight, etc. on the recto, and county statistics on the verso. Printed three columns to a page. - An English Dictionary is an important work that documents the beginnings of the English language and the pedagogical methods used to teach it to children. Coles is noted for his inclusion of earlier works including John Ray's Collection of English Words not Generally used (1673) and Richard Head's The Canting Academy (1673). Both works contained slang words and Head's specifically contained "canting terms" or criminal slang which Coles justified by saying "It may chance to save your throat from being cut, or (at least) your Pocket from being pickt." Therefore, it is perhaps the first complete snapshot of the complete usage of English both by the upper and lower classes. It is a seminal work in understanding the development of the English language in the early modern period, and is still used by lexicographers today. - Cole is best known for his works on teaching and lexicography including The Newest, Plainest and the Shortest Short-Hand (1674), The Compleat English Schoolmaster (1674), Nolens volens, or, You shall make Latin whether you will or no (1675), and An English Dictionary Explaining the Difficult Terms (1676). - Quite Rare. ; 8vo; [338] pages

Printed for Jacob Tonson; and sold by James Knapton, George Strahan, and Egbert Sanger, 1706. - Includes Dedication, Prolouge, Epilouge, and Persona Dramatis. Play Is Complete. First Few Leaves printed off-center and closely trimmed. - Reference: ESTCT14531 - The Way of the World is one of the masterpieces of english comic drama. It had its premiere at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre in early March 1700, where, as Downes records, "being too keen a Satyr, [it] had not the Success the Company Expected". Although the play gradually gained respect and became a standard part of the repertory, the initial disappointment was enough to confirm Congreve's decision to stop writing plays. ; [8],68p pages

London, 1664, FIRST EDITION, Full Calf Leather,
Printed by E. Cotes for Henry Brome at the Gun in Ivy-lane, 1664. - The poet and translator Charles Cotton (1630- 87) , best remembered as friend of Izaak Walton and co-author of The Universal Angler (1676) , was at the centre of a small literary coterie on the Derbyshire-Staffords hire border and was himself a prolific writer. His translations included the essays of Montaigne ( 1685) , which was frequently reprinted, and among his original verse writings his robust burlesque of Virgil, Scarronides (1664) , proved especially popular, going through numerous editions. His miscellaneous poems were largely unpublished in his lifetime, though preserved in a manuscript kept by his friends, and were posthumously published in 1689. - REFERENCES: Pforzheimer 222; Wing C6391; ESTCR215032; 8vo; [4], 112 pages

Leedes, 1750, Full Calf Leather,
Printed and sold by James Lister; and Nath. Bell, in York, [1750]. First published in London in 1707 as 'Scripture-truths demonstrated' in three volumes. The is the First Edition incorporating all three volumes of his sermons into one. - Stephen Crisp (1628-1692) was an eminent Quaker minister for thirty-five years, frequently ministering in Holland and Germany in addition to England and Scotland. His writing has great detail regarding his twenty year struggle to find truth, as he marched through the various deficit sects and kept returning to the world in frustration, always with the Light of Christ reminding him of his continued unredeemed state. His experiences are both educational and encouraging to any who seek the fullness of Christ. ; 8vo; 98, 89-456 pages

This large folio comprises all of the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, numerous Indices, the Life of Cyprian (Vita S. Caecilii Cypriani), and Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson (Joannem Cestriensem) (1613-1686). - Saint Cyprianus was a 3rd century bishop of Carthage whose writings are important to early Christian history. - REFERENCE: Wing.
